Waratah Shoot

I got a call from a client , (John Deere International/Waratah NZ ) to shoot a new Waratah head for their advertising. This is a machine designed to be connected to a huge digger for use in the forestry industry. Its an amazing machine to watch in action. I had to go to their workshop to shoot it with studio lights as the head is huge and weighs allot. Even my portable backgrounds were not big enough to fill the background in the space provided but sometimes you just have to work around that. The machine will be clearcut and placed into the design work. I then also had to head north to Whangarei and shoot the machine in action (both video and stils)

Waiariki TVC

The week before xmas I worked on a job for a set TVC's for the client - Waiariki. Fuel Advertising was the agency and Gordon Miller directed it. Vinnie Manoit from Liquid Pictures and I worked together to shoot and DOP it. It was a great crew and we managed to get it all shot on a super tight deadline .

I recently did a shoot for Mike Heydon of www.jetproductions.co.nz . Mike is a top NZ commercial photog from Wellington and usually shoots all the NZ Tri Series for his client, he gave me a call and asked me to cover the round for him as he had another shoot on that day. The wind was blowing about 25knts across the lake so it made it tough for the competitors. These events are fun to shoot, you don't get to stop until you have sent off images for the press releases.

Shoot - Jenna Makgill - Milford Sounds

I got to shoot video on a small Red Bull project with Jenna Makgill, she was riding a fixed gear bike through the Homer Tunnel on the way to Milford sounds. The area is so stunning, hugh peaks and valleys. The gradient of the tunnel is 1:10 so it was incredible to see Jenna ride though it with no brakes and a fixed gear, only getting to slow down by sliding the back tyre. Red Bull Backyard Digger

I was shooting stills on this project that was on the Beverland family farm in the waikato for the Red Bull Backyard digger, it was a super busy weekend as I had to go to Manfield to shoot Mike Whiddett and his drift car also.

The guys transformed the yard into a impressive set of dirt jumps. The plan was to hit up the jumps as soon as possible but weather put a stop to that so everyone had to return a couple of times to complete the project

Australian MTB Mag - DVD

The latest issue of the Australian MTB mag is out in NZ, on the cover is Cadel Evans and also the 40min DVD I shot of the Aus MTB crew coming over to the Central north island and riding the trails, the whaka 100 and also the world singlespeed champs. Hummer - shoot

A while back I shot the Hummer for Red Bull, it had had some new mods done to it, like engine, wheels etc. The thing was looking super trick. I used a combination of ambient light and flash with multiple shots then put together in photoshop.

I have been lucky enough to have been able to test this product early. James from enlight photo, the guy that brought out the ORBIS ring flash www.orbisflash.com and also the handy FRIO www.friocoldshoe.com has turned his hand to creating this awesome shutter app for iphone, ipad and ipod touch. You can just touch the button to take a pic. It also has a timer, bulb, timelapse, sound for the 'clap to snap' and also a shake feature for the 'Shake to Take". You can set shutter interval, duration for timelapse. You can also set timer and schedule in Bulb. Turn on the Sound and you can clap and the shutter is released. Set it to Shake , shake the phone and the shutter is released. Very cool!

2011 Creative Arts - Live Video

In August I did a job on the Creative Arts show for the team at Dynamics AV, I looked after all the live video production , directing and switching the feeds also. The Dynamic AV team created and amazing technical show. There were 3 incredible shows, a couple of thousand people each night getting to watch the show. We ran full HD switching and then recorded to drives also for a dvd production.

There were seminars and a small photo expo. The expo was average but there were a couple of speakers that were fantastic. The keynote speakers were Art Wolfe and Frans Lanting. I have to say that Art Wolfe was incredible. He blew me away about what he has achieved with his photography, his passion and the fact that he is just not slowing down at all. He outdoor animal work is simply stunning. But he shoots more than that, he showed a portrait series he is currently work on which I am sure will appear soon. It was some of the most creative work I have seen in a long time.

Snow - in Whakarewarewa forest

The winter brought a couple of big storms across New Zealand. The country got slammed with alot of snow. Snow even fell in Auckland. ?? crazy. In Rotorua , a small amount of snow even covered the big hills in the forest. I just had to get out and take some pics, I managed to get some shots on the trails . Hopefully a couple of the results will be out in a mag soon.

The Red Bulletin mag just keeps getting better, awesome stories from around the globe about, Sport, Athletes, Musicians, Actors and Culture. In the back of the mag there is a section called 'Get the Gear' . In the August issue I took a shot of Chuck Berry, legend base jumper, wingsuiter, etc from Queenstown and some of his gear he uses. In the pic was an incredible plane he was building. He is now flying that plane around the skies of the south island.

2011 Tour de France Winner - Cadel Evans - back in 1994

So Cadel Evans has won the 2011 Tour de France, the guy totally deserves it. Backk in 1994 I shot at the UCI World MTB cup in Cairns Australia. A young guy came out of no where and got 5th against the top pros, it was a huge effort. You could see then there was something special about the guy. He eventually went on to win 2 MTB world cups overalls, a world road title and now the yellow jersey in france.

Last week I went to the South Island for an editorial shoot. I few into Christchurch then drove down to Winchester. It was a stunning evening, cold though. I recently went to Hampton Downs to shoot stills for Red Bull of Made Mike Whiddett, NZ drift car driver . The Red Bull Chronicles TV guys were there too filming for the show and also a webclip. Mike has incredible driving skills , he can put a car anywhere he wants on a track and in any position . He is always a favorite to shoot.

The May issue of the Red Bulletin mag came out last week, another great read. There is a article about DH Mtb rider

Brook MacDonald in it. I shot the pics in Queenstown, I was with the crew shooting for the Red Bull Chronicles TV show season 2. Things happen quickly when you have to shoot around the guys filming, you do not get alot of time to shoot setups. You just have to be ready with gear to grab moments with the athlete. Everyone works together to help each other out though.

Recently I went down to Christchurch for the day to shoot some video for a project I am working on, we finished the shoot so went for a drive to check out the city and see the devastating damage the earthquake did. We only saw a little of it because the central business area has completely been closed off from the public. I could not believe it. So sad . You see it on the TV but its hard to really comprehend it till you see it in real life. so much damage.

Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix

A few weeks back a was lucky enough to shoot with Gee Atherton for Shimano Europe . They needed a pic of Gee in the studio in his race gear. A photographer in Europe was doing the campaign but since Gee was in Queenstown training for the summer I got a call to see if i could get a couple of shots. I have done a couple of jobs overseas this year filming with HDSLR . To make traveling easy and also to make it easy to shoot fast I broke down the filming equipment into 2 pelican cases. I used Pelican cases because I knew it was going to be raining in one of the locations. Also to really keep the gear super protected from the knocks.

The december issue of the Red Bulletin is out and in it is a 8 page feature written by Robert Tighe. The event was huge. I took the pics. I managed to shoot over 80 portraits as well as the racing. It was a long day. Look out for the free mag in the NZ Herald On Tues 7th Dec

Shooting Garth For NINER Bikes USA

Getting up at 5.30am to shoot is normal for some photographers, the light is amazing when the sun rises on the horizon, I managed to get Garth up so I could get his portrait for www.ninerbikes.com in the USA. Dave Joy from Bike Vegas came along to help out which was great of him. There was not a single complaint !

I was super stoked with the results, check my website for one of the final images soon

World SingleSpeed Champs 2010

The World Single Speed Champs was run on 23rd of Oct 2010 in Rotorua , NZ.

The event is a collection of people having fun riding there bikes, smiling , dressing up in crazy outfits and also trying to compete in a race. Well only a few were really trying to race and go for the title. There is no prize money for winning , only glory and of course a tattoo. If you win you have to get a tattoo on your body! There was close to 1000 riders , 400 of those were from 30 different countries! This is a massive event to put together, big congrats goes to the team of Dean Watson and Marcus Diprose from N-DURO Events for making this all come together, also a big shout out to Graeme Simpson for get the word out there about the event and keeping the excitement going on the net about it all year

I have been shooting a video production all week on the Canon HDDSLRS surrounding the week , I had to shoot stills at the SSWC race so I called up Tim Pierce to come shoot video of the race for me.

Local Garth Weinberg took out the title and also earned himself a tattoo! So its time to edit images and get shots sent overseas to clients for publicaton

OZONE Shoot - Western Australia

In September I went to Western Australia to shoot the OZONE Kitesurf 2011 Product range. Trying to get all the weather elements to come together can be difficult, sun, wind and also wanting to get some great swell. We managed to get the conditions over a 2 week period. Had to do a few days of waiting here and there but there was always things to shoot. We even managed to get some fishing in, some amazing yellow fin Tuna and Hugh even hooked up a huge Sail fish for a 2 hr battle. Kit: I shot with Canon 1d Mark 1V, Canon 5d mark 11, Elinchrom Ranger Flashes.

The first 2 kits were released on Oct 1st, the the images are getting out in the market place already. Lots to come still.

The Red Bulletin - Sept

The september issue of The Red Bulletin had an article about the Red Bull International Snowboard Performance Camp, Red Bull snowboard athletes from all around the world gathered at SnowPark to getting coaching and practice new skills and tricks. There was a great media crew on the job, NZ Greenroom Productions did the video work, Miles Holden and myself shot the images. The images were sent to Austria every night, here is a quick look at the article that was in The Red Bulletin.

James Madelin, the creator of the Orbis Ring flash approach me to come along on a shoot with Garry Sullivan from NZO Clothing . We went out on our bikes into the Whirinaki Forest for the day. James has created this nice little doco of behind the scenes using the Orbis ring flash . James product has taken off around the world which is so great to see.

I have been working on some new images for the famous Agrodome tourism attraction recently.

It's great when all elements come together in a shoot. We had huge winds while shooting this

image below and freezing cold. The stage/shearer guys were great and just kept smiling!

Whirinaki Forest

The forest in Whirinaki is so stunning, untouched native bush. Went for a ride 2 weeks ago to do some shots with GT NZ Bikes. If you get a chance to ride the track , do it!

I have just finished putting new images on a 4th McDonalds, A new building was built out towards Rotorua airport and they wanted 3 images blown up large , 2 inside and 1 outside , below is the outside image. Nzone Skydive was a huge help in getting this image shot. Thanks Sarah!

A few months back I went to Queenstown with RedBull NZ to shoot Ben Brown and Chuck Berry , Greenroom productions was shooting the video for the Red Bull Chronicles Tv show also , Ben Brown paddled the Nevis Rapid which was awesome to shoot.

I was shooting video today, I shot on Canon 5D mark 11 and also Canon 1D mark 1V,

shot from 100 ISO all the way up to 4000 ISO. Such a great look from the cameras.
